Is Comdex for DEC Alpha only? ;-)

At Comdex was Digital Equipment the king. Why? DEC announces the 21066A processor (a 0.5-micron version of the Alpha 21066 processor), operating 40% faster than the previous version. Speeds announced are 166-MHz and 233-MHz. Price is 396 USD in 1000 unit quantities.

Only microprocessor is nothing without computer. DEC introduces the AlphaStation 200 4/166 (featuring a 166-MHz Alpha 21064 processor, and PCI bus) for 6,995 USD, AlphaStation 200 4/233 (featuring a 233MHz 64-bit Alpha AXP 21064 processor, and PCI bus) for 11,750 USD, AlphaStation 400 4/233 (233MHz Alpha 21064 processor, and PCI bus) for 12,595 USD. Besides workstations Digital Equipment introduces the a lot os fervers - AlphaServer 1000 4/200 (for 15,970 USD), AlphaServer 2000 4/200 (for 18,070 USD), AlphaServer 2100 4/275 (for 21,940 USD) and the best in the end - DEC 7000 Model 700 multiprocessor enterprise server (for 120,000 USD).

Digital Equipment ships its AXP 21064A 225- and 275-MHz Alpha processors in volume quantities. The processor features dual 16 KB internal caches. Price of 275MHz version is 1,192 USD in 1000 unit quantities.

Autumn Comdex was great surprise of processor frequency. While other processor makers try to have 200 MHz version of their CPU, Digital Equipment demonstrates a system running a 320-MHz 21064A Alpha processor.

"A" version of Alpha

Digital Equipment announces the 21064A Alpha processor, capable of 275-MHz. Dual cache sizes are 16 KB for data and instructions. Pricing is 965 USD for 225-MHz, and 1586 USD for 275-MHz version, (price is for one piece in 1000 unit quantities). It is manufactured using a 0.5 micron CMOS process. Announcing happened at the Microprocessor Forum.

The first Alpha for consumers

Digital Equipment announces the 166MHz 21066 processor. It features 64 bit 21064 core, memory interface for RAM (SRAM, DRAM or VRAM), and 32bit PCI bus interface. Price is 424 USD in 1000 unit quantities. Performance is estimated at 70 SPECint92 and 105 SPECfp92.

Shipment of 200MHz Alpha starting

Digital Equipment Corporation released computer DEC 3000 Model 500 AXP, featuring Alpha 21064 processor clocked at 150 MHz with 512 KB cache L2, 32 MB RAM, 1 GB hard drive, 6x Turbochannel expansion slots, CD-ROM drive, and 19-inch color monitor. Price is 38,995 USD. Performance is 121.5 SPECmark.
