The T3E
series of supercomputers was announced by Cray Research, Inc., near the end
of 1995. The T3E is a massively parallel processing (MPP) system, designed
for use on technical applications in scientific computing. A T3E system
contains a large number of processing elements (PE), arranged in a 3D
network. Each PE consists of a DEC Alpha EV5 RISC microprocessor. Cray used
current version of Alpha 21164A (EV56) at 675 MHz. In one Cray T3E system may
be from 40 (model LC40) to 2,176 (model LC2176) processing elements (320 to
17,408 Alpha processors!). Minimum capacity of RAM memory is from 10 GB (for
LC40) to 544 GB (for LC2176). They can give peak performance from 54 GFLOPS
to 3 TFLOPS. All these configurations has liquid cooling. |

Equipment Corp. today slashed prices on its powerful Alpha microprocessors by
as much as 50 %. A 300 MHz Alpha 21164 chip, for example, now costs 395 USD,
compared with 695 USD previously. |

Samsung
Electronics Co.,Ltd. today announced successful fabrication of the Alpha
21164 microprocessor. The parts are fully compatible with DEC`s Alpha 21164
product family which is currently in production. Samsung will demo an Alpha
NT workstation in their booth #L2412 at Fall COMDEX 1996. General sampling
will begin in January `97 with speeds ranging from 366 MHz to 500MHz. The
64-bit Alpha 21164 microprocessor is the first product coming out of the
Digital/Samsung Alpha alliance agreement which was announced in June 1996.
The high-end Alpha 21164-500 delivers an estimated 15.4 SPECint95 and 21.1
SPECfp95, while thelow-end Alpha 21164-366 delivers an estimated 11.3
SPECint95 and 15.4 SPECfp95. |
